24th Jul, 2017

Yesterday, 44 engines roared to life in the sixth edition of the KCB Simba Autocross Championship. This time round saw the highest number of participants in the five categories throughout the history of the competition. The previous championship had 28 racers only.

Sikh Union Club were the main organizers of the competition which took place at Izmir Raceways in Mai Mahiu. This is a new race course that’s privately owned. It offers a 3.06Km course with a bridge allowing two cars to compete at the same time.

Most of the usual contenders were present igniting a much-heated contest which lasted for four heats unlike the usual five heats per contender. The decision was agreed upon owing to the multiple competitors, the nature of the new course which was largely dusty and meeting the set time allocated for the competition. Nonetheless, the championship was an adrenaline filled spectacle, with rivalries being renewed in the quest for glory. Sean Cardovillis, the NTV sports anchor, kept the crowd engaged amid the bustling crowd and great music playing in the background.

The 4WD turbo trophy was clinched by Rehan Shah while Asad Anwar and Azar Anwar finished second and third in the same category. Loveloyt Singh won the 2WD turbo category, while 2WD Non-turbo driver Soman Vohra was crowned the champion. The bambino class witnessed great rivalry between Syanna Jessop and Yuvraj Matharu with Yuvraj finishing seconds ahead of Jessop.

Ryan Bailey was crowned the 2WD junior champion during the event.

“Autocross championship has become more popular. It’s a spectacle one can watch the entire race from a vantage point. More lovers of the sport are tagging along with their families for a weekend hangout to enjoy the experience. Hence it’s popularity.” Antony Gatei, the ANC Steward said.

If you missed out, gear up for the next championship. Stay tuned for more details.
