There is no friend as loyal as a book

We all have that one friend who seems to be allergic to EBooks. Conversation with them usually goes something like this:

“Beggars cannot be choosers when it comes to reading. You’re poor, you cannot afford to be choosy about reading EBooks.”

“Yeah well there’s no point in reading Chimamanda if it feels like I’m reading a text instead.”

“No, you have it all wrong. EBooks are cheaper and more convenient. You can read them on your iPad or Kindle, or your phone anytime, anywhere, even Standard One kids have tablets now.”

“That just makes reading more expensive. As in, I must have a tablet first so that I can read? Anyway, as you said, I’m poor, I can’t afford a tablet right now just to read books.”

There are a couple of people who think that reading can’t be enjoyed if it’s not accomplished through a physical book. It’s not wrong, but in a digitally inclined world, they are likely to be left behind. That’s why the theme of this year’s International Literacy Day is“Literacy in a digital world”.

Literacy concerns itself with language, knowledge, communication as well as access to information. The people who don’t learn how to navigate digital technology can find themselves missing out on essential skills like operating computer systems, learning online, and consequently end up missing business opportunities or learning opportunities. So people without digital literacy skills may end up marginalized because the digital environment is like a language. If you don’t speak it, you may become irrelevant real quick.

With the 2jiajiri program initiated by the KCB Foundation, the out of school youth between the ages of 18 and 35 years have an opportunity to receive a scholarship that will provide them with technical skills as well as up-skill and certify existing micro-entrepreneurs who wish to move their business from the informal to the formal sector.

It is very important that we learn how to think digitally; the faster we can learn how to do this, the easier it is for us to navigate through this ever-changing world.
