KCB Chess Team Shines at the Continental Tourney in Burundi.

KCB Chess Team players soared high to clinch three trophies at the concluded Africa Amateur Individual Chess Championship that was held in Burundi.

The KCB contingent comprised Candidate Master Ben Magana, Highest rated female Joyce Nyaruai, Joseph Methu, Jackson Kamau, Ricky Sang, teenage sensation Robert McLigeyo, Gweyani Jumba, and Elizabeth Cassidy.

Top chess players from nine countries – hosts Burundi, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, South Africa, Somalia, Congo, Algeria and Angola competed at the continental event that was categorized based on player ratings (U2300 open section, U2300 ladies’ section, U2000 open section, U2000 ladies’ section, U1700 open section and U1700 ladies’ section).

FIDE Master Joyce Nyaruai, and Gweyani Jumba bagged gold in the under 2000, and under 1700 ladies’ sections respectively. Elizabeth Cassidy clinched the silver medal in the under 1700 ladies’ section.

Following their exploits, the gold medalists, Joyce Nyaruai and Gweyani Jumba qualified to represent Africa at the 2025 World Amateur Individual Chess Championship in Serbia.
