The NBK Basketball team Phoenix saw off Moischers, a top seeded Eastern Conference team in the quarters of the Nairobi Basketball Association league to qualify for the playoff semis. The team had earlier overrun the Saints Basketball team of Kitengela in the round of 16 beating them 2-0 to book their place in the quarters.
Dan Mbugua supplied 28 points and William Okombo supplied 14 points and 8 assists as NBK Phoenix beat top seed Moischers 60-55 on Sunday 3rd to sweep the best-of-three pre-semi-final series. Moischers led by Kenya 3*3 (Three-ex-three) Senior National Team Head Coach Jeff Mwaniki gave Phoenix a mighty scare before going down. It was Tony “Leftie” Onyango who hit Moischers opening basket as they took control of the proceedings. They scored 11 straight points to take a 11-2 advantage and a 16-13 first quarter edge.
With both teams on level 26-26 scores at the break, Phoenix under the guidance of Ugandan FIBA Certified Head Coach Dr. Manuel “Doctor” King, pulled off a tactical masterclass when they took the lead 49-46 in the third quarter with a Dan Mbugua world class three pointer throw. With 4:40 to play, Mbugua then hit them again with a free shot and added two more as Moischers collapsed and bowed out of the playoffs.
Phoenix who donned the elegant Green KCB Lions colours in game two as a show of love to the Group’s vibrant cheering squad that have been supporting the team throughout the season will face either Multimedia University or Dagoretti in the Best of three Semi Finals as from Next week.
The Bankers still have their eyes affixed at the NBA Championship trophy and also winning the Countrywide Playoffs slated to be held in Eldoret later in November. Top 3 of the Countrywide Playoffs will be promoted to Division 2 KBF Basketball.
