The WRC Safari Rally Greening Legacy continues to plant thousands of trees in various schools and health centers in the greater Mount Kenya region.
Under the conservation theme, the WRC Safari Rally is growing 19 million trees over a period of three years to commemorate the 19 years that the Safari Rally was out of the World Rally Championship circuit.
Cabinet Secretary Amb Dr Amina Mohamed said: 'We are targeting parts of our wetlands and water catchment areas affected by deforestation, traditional
Safari Rally Routes, and the Moi International Sports Centre’s spectator stage, Kasarani."
A multi-agency operation team is driving this project in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Save our Rivers Initiative (SAORI).
Amina continued: "This Safari Rally Greening Legacy project joins the FIA/WRC family’s model of giving back to nature. Our target is to plant and nurture trees in all 47 counties. So far, we have planted over 600,000 trees in partnership with SAORI, and other community-based organizations." The partnerships and ownership at the community level with communities have helped us achieve survival rates of above 90% after the first year of planting."
Some of the places where the Project has planted trees include areas along River Thingithu, Thanantu, Bwothunaro and many wetlands in Meru County.
The Project has also reached out to Thika River in Kiambu and Machakos counties as well as Ngare Ndare forest Meru and Laikipia Counties.
Mbooni hills, Chyulu hills, Mbui Nzau hill Makueni County, KWSTI in Nakuru county, Kamau river in Kitui County River Kibos in Kisumu county, Kakamega Forest in Kakamega County, Sirimon river in Meru and Laikipia counties, River Mukothima and River Maara in Tharaka Nithi have also benefited from the noble initiative.
The WRC Safari Rally Kenya will revolve around the lakeside regions.of.Elementaita and Naivasha from June 24-27. The event is cosponsored by KCB Bank Kenya and Toyota Kenya.
