Pink Isn’t Just A Color, It’s An Attitude

4th Nov, 2016

October was breast cancer awareness month and for 31 days in the year, the world was painted all shades of pink.

The tide has changed when it comes to thoughts about cancer with just a few years ago, the mere utterance of the word sent shivers down some of our spines.

We’re in a new age now where the word has gained a more positive response and it’s about time!

In this case, cancer patients are warriors, they are survivors and overall sources of inspiration.

Research has shown that in every circle of friends, at least 2 of 3 individuals have cancer or have relatives suffering or have succumbed to the disease.

What this has created, is a community that is built on support and optimism.

This is not an exclusive club, nor a secret society. It’s a growing family open to all. That includes you!

Your part in all this is simplified to one thing: Be present and aware.

This ranges from offering emotional support, to actively participating in awareness activities such as check-ups, to simply learning and understanding more about cancer.

October, as the annual celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness epitomized the above.

This period was dedicated to all the breast cancer warriors who have victoriously battled the disease and celebrated the lives of those who have succumbed to it.

Now for the men in the house. This is not a conversation that exempts you.

While breast development in men stops at puberty that of women does not. However, the presence of breast tissue is a reality in both male and females. It is then no longer a wonder that men too can develop breast cancer.

The lack of awareness in male breast cancer and misconceptions that try to prove that men cannot develop breast cancer has led to devastatingly high mortality rates. The truth, however, still remains, men have breasts and they too can develop breast cancer.

Regular screening will ensure that if at all there are suspicious cells, they are detected in good time. Early detection is the window of opportunity that separates you from the unknown.

Breast Cancer awareness does not end with the close of October, however.

Think of it as more of a springboard to become more proactive and conscious in our efforts to win the fight against not just breast cancer but all types of cancer.

It is also a call to action for all those who may have missed on the free screening activities. It’s high time for us to drag along aunties, uncles, mothers, fathers, girlfriends, boyfriends, sisters and brothers for these screenings. There are even apps that guide you on how to perform a DIY breast check; so no excuses.

As we say hello to a new month, wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. Wear it  all year round. Wear it proud.

Make a personal pledge to become a cancer warrior today because tomorrow, you just might save a life.
